The agony of bleeding machines
A melody in shadow decay
The apathy of broken routines
Our history is fading away
Humanity possesses a remarkable capacity to remember, yet an equally troubling talent for forgetting. Across thousands of generations, we have accumulated the wisdom of civilizations, preserved in fragile books, monuments, and machines. But history survives only through our willingness to care. Apathy is perhaps the most insidious form of extinction, for it allows entire worlds of knowledge to disappear without protest. The universe is indifferent to our achievements, our suffering, and our mistakes. We cannot afford to be. If we surrender our curiosity and compassion, the greatest tragedy may be that we vanish without ever understanding what we have lost.
Vienna-based producer Valerian Steel explores this uneasy relationship in System Apathy, the latest release from his hardware industrial project Manufracture Music. Drawing upon the mechanical discipline of Front 242 and Front Line Assembly, the muscular electronic aggression of Nitzer Ebb, and the experimental severity of Orphx, Steel approaches industrial music with the conviction of someone who considers electricity a philosophical position.
The track belongs to his A.C.I. (Analog Core Industrial) concept, a deliberate rejection of digital shortcuts, software instruments, and AI-generated music. Every mechanical collision, electronic disturbance, and rhythmic assault originates from physical hardware. There is something wonderfully stubborn about this commitment, especially in an era when technology increasingly promises to relieve humanity of the inconvenience of making anything ourselves.
Lyrically, System Apathy imagines civilization approaching terminal dysfunction. Political leaders embrace madness, armies obey destructive commands, environmental contamination spreads, and technological systems collapse under the weight of their own complexity. Machines acquire an almost biological vulnerability, their breakdowns echoing the deterioration of the societies that built them.
Beneath the industrial aggression lies a troubling philosophical question concerning memory. Humanity has spent millennia recording its achievements, tragedies, discoveries, and mistakes, yet preserving that inheritance requires a continued willingness to pay attention. When indifference becomes habitual, history begins disappearing while its witnesses remain alive.
With System Apathy, Manufracture Music considers the terrible possibility that civilization’s final failure may arrive through a thousand small acts of indifference, each accompanied by the reassuring hum of machinery operating exactly as instructed.

Steel’s background in classical piano, choral performance, and late-eighties alternative music lends additional perspective to his fascination with mechanical expression. His other projects, Music of Synergia and Fourtyfication*5, explore cinematic ambience and glitch-oriented electronic dance music, respectively.
