Perestroika Offers Up a Slice of Dance Heaven With “Foreign Keys”

The newest offering from the Montreal-based band, Perestroika, is a slice of dance heaven. Members Shravan Deolalikar, Mickey Dagger and Gustavo Rodriguez follow up their 2021 EP, Monolith, with the self-released first single “Foreign Keys” on the upcoming LP of the same name. “Foreign Keys” is disco-influenced post-punk, an ode to the steamy European club scene of the 1980s where goths, mods and New Romantics all shared the dance floor. With an energy that permeates from the get, there’s an air of Nuovo Testmento or the moody Italo-influenced work of Lauer mixed with a pop-drenched Modern English or the iteration of late 80s New Order

Foreign Keys‘ producer, Jonas Falco, writes:

Seven floor filling bad decision blasts of lustrous and icy disco, topped with deep and melodic vocals that feel like The Sisters of Mercy on an all inclusive vacation in Italy circa 1981. Touches of the ever eternal KINO, “Soviet Disco,” Brazilian Funk, Moroder, Happy Mondays, and an 80s action film you’ve never seen. A dark coat full of secrets, betrayal, back channel supremacy, justice, and malaise, “Foreign Keys” is simultaneously the sound of going up and coming down.

And it’s true: the bright synths that merge with the post-punk vocals make for a sunshiny goth conundrum that is playful and just what we needed. The “Foreign Keys”‘ music video would fit alongside any turn-of-the-90s house visuals. (Technotronic, anyone?) With punches of new wave neons and backup dancers, there’s no lack of nostalgia here.
