Mindless doom scroll
Ignore the death toll
Maybe it’s just the same
Fresh from the Bay Area, Vague Lanes unveils the official video for their latest single Unraveling, a stark reflection on perception, history, and the slow-motion collapse of civilization. The second single from their forthcoming album Divergence and Declaration peels back the layers of disillusionment, exposing the fractures beneath the surface.
Some see decline as new, a sudden spiral into chaos. Others know better: things have always teetered on the brink, always frayed at the edges. Unraveling examines this divide, the contrast between alarm and resignation, between those who fight and those who shrug. The lyrics walk through streets where tents stand beside playgrounds, where turmoil lingers like smog, where time drags its feet but never heals. Doom-scrolling numbs the senses, the death toll blurs into background noise, and resignation sets in like rust. The speaker stands at the threshold: to flee or to remain, to fight or to fold, to pretend it was ever any different.
“I used Oakland as a backdrop for the lyrics,” says vocalist Mike Cadoo. “I love Oakland, yet there has always been such negative stigma around it. It’s always had its challenges and gotten past them to take on new challenges. As times change, so do those challenges. It’s always been this way.”
The video, directed by Erin Gould of Minimum Wage Entertainment, captures raw energy in a cavernous Oakland warehouse, a backdrop of steel and silence fractured by sound. The band stands locked in motion, each note echoing against concrete, guitars ringing like sirens, lyrics striking like a call to arms. Gould frames the moment with precision, turning a live performance into an urgent, unvarnished statement. Cadoo’s voice commands, the riffs drive forward, the words cut deep. Echoes of Chameleons, Killing Joke, The Call, and She Past Away drift through the static, each influence sharpening the message, intensifying the fire.
