NYC Electronic Music Artist Vexillary Debuts Video for Kris Baha ReDub of “Animalic”

Vexillary is the brainchild of New York-based producer Reza Seirafi. His diverse work is seeded with a singular undercurrent of alluring gloom and shaped by his unique scientific approach to production. As a former chemist and perfumer, Reza was fascinated by the secret bonds between unrelated chemical ingredients that form well-balanced, otherworldly scents. Vexillary’s music follows the same process as he blends a vast array of musical parts to create his own brand of decadent techno, darkwave, and EBM. Vexillary’s music is far from formulaic, however – and his records are proof of that.

Vexillary’s original version of Animalic, from the 2023 Horror in Dub album, heaves with restless urgency, a beast pacing in a too-tight pen, its breath thick with longing, its pulse quickened by the scent of escape. The beat bucks, the bass snarls, the synths slither—a mechanical heart thundering against a steel cage.  Rhythms coil and recoil, electric currents snapping like sinew stretched taut. Tension stacks like bricks in a crumbling wall, each measure another crack widening the breach.

The track begged for reinvention, demanded excess: a push past the brink where the wild thing breaks free – a tasty remix. Enter fellow New Yorker Kris Baha.

“I wanted to approach (Animalic) from the lens of where I am at musically but still keeping the main theme of the hook of the song and intensifying the message further,” says Baha, on the remixing process. “To me, the idea of ‘going animalic’ is reiterated further with the break fills followed by the drop and then the call back ‘I’m tired of the static’—having these short moments of escape from the normal before jumping back in, the familiar vs unfamiliar.”

Vexillary’s Animalic video – his own fevered vision – drags the viewer through a maze of metal and mirage, where the digital and the instinctual clash like teeth on steel. A girl, adrift in a VR abyss, watches anima machines locked in brutal combat, their movements jagged, relentless. The beat hammers, the tension swells, and the walls of illusion buckle. By the end, she is no longer watching—she is the storm itself, wired and wild, swallowed whole by the furious pulse of the beat.

With his EPs for Blaq Records, Reza Seirafi took on classic industrial sounds as ingredients and transmuted them to leave a refreshing modern take in his trail. In 2021, after nearly a decade of releasing music on independent labels, Vexillary founded his own imprint, con:trace. Vexillary’s first LP on the label, Full Frontal Lunacy, was a riveting EBM concept album juxtaposing Vexillary’s own brush with madness with that of a society on the brink of downfall.

Vexillary’s coveted sophomore full-length, Crash and Yearn, followed soon after in the summer of 2022. The critically acclaimed album presented an evolution in sound with its bold production choices, emotive vocals, and storytelling. 2023’s Horror in Dub is a compelling electronic outing that saw  Vexillary adding a new layer of dubtinted bass music to his technoid darkwave palette to present a deep dive into the realm of horror and haunting beauty.

Stripped bare, split open, stitched anew: Horror ReDubs takes the sinew and circuitry of Horror in Dub and reanimates it into something colder, harder, hungrier. Vexillary’s third LP, already a monster of its own making, is dissected and reassembled by ten sonic surgeons, each grafting their own pulse onto its mechanized carcass. Blush Response twists Insurrection into a metallic snarl, Leon Switch drags My Vertigo into a bass-drenched abyss, VHS Head fractures Paris Spleen into a stuttering, static-laced hallucination. This is a machine-stitched nightmare stalking the wastelands of a world gone wrong.
