Minimal Synth Outfit Individual Industry Thaw Out Ice Water’s “Cubic” for New Video

Alexandre Twin formed the Brazilian minimalist synth outfit Individual Industry in 1987, singlehandedly recording ten demo tapes between 1987-1990, before Maurizio Bonito and Lilian Vaz joined the band. Six months later they released their first official demo tape, called Apology.

In 1996 the band released Ice-Water, with production by Roberto Verta (Harry), meeting with success in Brazil and Europe.  The band performed a live version of the song “Cubic” on the TV show Metropolis, appearing with a violinist. The band went on to do extensive world touring, appearing on various compilation albums, and grace dance halls all around the globe. The mid-90s were met with personnel and style changes, delving into groove, trip-hop, and Brazilian influences, but through the evolution Alexandre Twin has remained at the core of the project, combining forces with the likes of French kindred spirits Opera Multi Steel and Speaking Silence.

In 2021, Ice-Water was remastered by Marcelo Gallo, including five bonus tracks. The album will be released on 10 September 2021 as a twenty-fifth-anniversary limited edition CD digifile by Wave Records.

A music video for their hit, “Cubic”, is out for the first time to promote the release.

The video for “Cubic” was produced and edited by Lexx Grave (Underthegrave Production), mixing stock footage from the performance with graphics and stylized interpretive dancing. The result is hypnotic time-bending, a retro-tinged delight.

Listen to Individual Industry’s demo tape and live performance collection from 1991: it is an inspired, creative tour de force, sounding a little like everyone from wildly disparate influences from Krautrock (particularly CAN), Silver Apples, 60s psychedelia, Philip Glass vocal harmonies, and early Factory Records offerings. It is a unique, artful collection of minimal synth, during a time most artists in this genre were going big or packing it up for techno waters.
