Deathrock Act Obsidian Returns From The Brink in Their Video for “Vultures”

Death stalks around me.

The vultures will pick my bones.

They tear at my dead soul.

Missy Mortis, of  Florida deathrock act Obsidian, returns from the brink with prophecy: “Vultures”, a dark track about traumatic experiences and existential epiphany.

Obsidian was named after a rock sample used to self-inflict lacerations, before lead singer Missy Mortis’s institutionalization. Formed as a creative outlet for the various members to sort out their respective hardships, the group formed in 2018. The current lineup includes Missy Mortis (guitars, vocals, primary songwriter), Dent A Gon (bass guitar), The Crumbs’ Chuck Loose (drums and percussion), and Kathy D (synths and keyboards). The group combines a fierce love of rock music with darker electronic and esoteric elements.

“Vultures”, originally written for their Living Dead EP, was initially titled “The Vultures Will Pick Your Bones”.

“The original lyrics were written by another singer who is no longer in our band,” Mortis explains. “The song was originally about being institutionalized for self-harm…Since their departure from the band I have assumed the role for vocals on the song. I have since rewritten the song, now simply titled Vultures, to be about reflecting on post-institutionalized existentialism.”

The video, directed and edited by: Jaime Lopez/Photohause Productions, depicts an intercutting of the band playing, and a conceptual storyline illustrating the dark labyrinth of the mind: the futility of escape; the ever-elusive concept of safety; the bleak notion of digging your own grave through various means. It is an honest confrontation of the depths of despair.

With the Vultures EP, Obsidian follows up on 2018’s four-track EP A Swamp, which was followed by the 2019 EP Living Dead, 2020’s single release “Eros, Hypnos and Thanatos.” Vultures was released through the newly formed Tequesta Records: a collaboration between percussionist Chuck Loose and writer, artist, and musician Adel Souto.

Vultures is available now on streaming services, but will be released on vinyl on 10/30. Order Here.
