The symbolism of the humble hummingbird is rife with magic. This tiny spectral envoy of spirit subtly nudges the beholde to revel in life’s pure indulgences, and, like the nectar of the flower they drink, soak in instances of unbridled delight. This fragile feathered being directs the soul to delve into the layers of emotional susceptibility, and welcome the radiant waltz of love and buoyancy. The hummingbird prompts your heart to spread its wings and take flight into the sphere of uninhibited joy and affection. During those ephemeral encounters with the wee buzzing hummingbird, a murmur of mystique lingers; an entreaty to liberate the heart from fear’s grip and courageously tread into the arms of love.

Songwriter Chris Koehn knows the mystique of the hummingbird well: he was visited by them during lockdown, and his latest single, “A Hummingbird Song,” is a touching tribute to the beaked beauty. With his creative flame ignited during the days of isolation, Koehn captures the essence of these winged wonders, crafting a melancholic masterpiece. “A Hummingbird Song” is amplified by the juxtaposition of Reno Rojas’ smoky vocals and the up-tempo percussion, masterfully recorded by Roderic Pichard at the iconic Chapel Studio.

As Koehn’s poignant lyrics unfold, they delve into the enigma of time, seemingly suspended when graced by the presence of these magical creatures. The hummingbird’s visit is often interpreted as a spiritual invitation to slow down and savor the present, a message that resonates deeply in this fast-paced world. Venturing further into the metaphysical, the song also hints at the possibility of these mesmerizing birds serving as emissaries from another dimension, bridging the gap between us and our dearly departed.

The lovely monochromatic video, directed by Susana Moyaho, is less about the hummingbird itself – and more about the emotion its little spirit imprints on us during its visits.

In the wake of his brother’s passing and amidst the confines of lockdown, Koehn channeled his anguish into the transformative power of music. Drawing from his personal journey, he began sharing his creations as a means for others to discover solace within the resonance of sound.

This poignant composition was brought to life through a collaboration with Jerry Quintana at Chapel Studio—a space intricately designed by Koehn himself, who seamlessly melds his dual talents as an architect and producer in his artistic persona.
