Berlin-based post-punk quartet Hello Pity pays homage to cult classic revenge exploitation film Ms. 45 in their latest video. The song has a decidedly deathrock edge to it, appropriate given the subject matter of the film—which climaxes during a Halloween party where the titular character, dressed as a nun wearing red lipstick, goes on a shooting spree in retaliation for violence and misogyny.
It was with this in mind that Hello Pity took their inspiration for the song following watching the 1981 film, directed by Abel Ferrera. It was a movie that resonated with the violence they experienced with friends:
“This was a way to put a light on a movie that actually makes me reflect on my own masculinity and on the fact that violence implicated on someone further brings a violent division between different genders and leaves no space for communication. I think we have all a part to play in making this situation better, especially us *cis men as we replicate a patriarchal view of society that will eventually fall upon our whole society.” says lead singer Colin.
The video for the new single is full of decadent and grotesque glamour and features characters dressed in ornate costumes amongst an assortment of decaying props, with one of them resembling Pantomime protagonist Pierrot.
