Скубут Underlines Sorrow with “Холод”

The Vienna-based Ukranian artist, Mikhail Shlepin, has been creating music for a few years now under the project name Скубут (Skubut) with live support by additional members Sergey Turiya on bass and guitarist Arthur Kudlay.

Greatly indebted to 1980s post-punk and darkwave sounds, Скубут echoes the sorrowful sentiments of the genre’s formative decade with the song “Холод.” Its doleful guitar lines intertwine with Shleipin’s low registered vocals as he sings, “And my heart gave itself only to you.” As a reflection of the purest of human emotion, the blistered and vulnerable song represents solitude, heartache and betrayal. While the style reflects the melancholy sounds of fellow modern post-punkers such as Ploho or The Agnes Circle, Скубут’s chilly core derives from the gloominess of seminal Eastern European post-punkers such as Dobri Isak or Siekiera.

The monochrome video for “Холод” reflects the sentiment of the song with its bleak and stormy city projections. There’s an emptiness here—a suitable day for a cold heart.
