Watch Robert Smith Serenade His Wife Mary Poole with “Plainsong” During Cure Concert

When days feel gloomy and overwhelming, it’s always wonderful to witness displays of pure beauty and love in this world. Longtime fan of The Cure. Frank (@Semper_Knarf on Twitter) had the perfect view of such a demonstration, as he caught a tender choreography of emotions and music between lovebirds Robert Smith and Mary Poole during a performance of “Plainsong” at the May 24 concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.

During the song, Smith turned away from the audience and gave his full attention to his adoring wife, who was watching offstage. With a demeanor undaunted, never wavering, he passionately breathed life into the culminating verses of his composition:

Sometimes you make me feel
Like I’m living at the edge of the world
Like I’m living at the edge of the world
“It’s just the way I smile, ” you said

Traversing back to the storied era of The Cure’s eighth studio effort, Disintegration, the album’s strikingly successful single “Lovesong,” a nuptial ode Smith composed for Poole, reverberates through time. This heartfelt reflection is part of their shared journey, gracefully enduring over three and a half decades of marriage and companionship that stretches back to the innocent days of their youth.

And Disintegration’s cathedral-esque album opener, “Plainsong,” is indeed a tune that chimes like wedding bells. During this performance, a pregnant pause blossoms in the space between Smith’s sung sentiments to his one and only life partner and the ensuing quietude, stretching out to create a moment steeped in profound depth – a tacit, intimate exchange. This subtle dance of adoring glances, and the palpable weight of shared history, is captured but fleetingly before Smith deftly redirects his attention, his energy returning to the expectant sea of faces in the audience.

Was already awesome to see, in person someone who helped me cope with so many things thru my teens and well into today, decades later. But to then see, knowing what a genuine person @RobertSmith seems to be, then turn and sing to his wife off stage was simply amazing! @thecure pic.twitter.com/EJJb9nkPS5
