Earlier this year Matt Johnson released The The’s first new music in 15 years a—the Record Store Day 2017 single “We Can’t Stop What’s Coming.”
That track and more will be part of a three-disc box set which highlights Johnson’s Radio Cineola web broadcast.
The collection, Radio Cineola: The Trilogy is out on October 20th, and includes a disc of other artists covering The The songs, another where Matt Johnson reads the poetic John Tottenham’s “The Inertia Variations”; and the third disc features interviews and sounds culled from the 12-hour UK Election Day Radio Cineola shortwave broadcast from 2015.
The box set features the following collaborators:

Tom Bright, Gillian Glover, Willis, Johanna St Michaels, Jacob Sahlqvist, Kate Wilkins, Gerald Jenkins, William Engdahl, Neil Clark, David Edwards / Media Lens, Marian St Laurent, Lucinda Rogers, Neil Sanders, Abdi Assadi, Zoe, Hepden, Eric Schermerhorn, Megan Drew, Polly Maberly, Niall Greig Fulton
There is also a documentary made about Johnson titled The Inertia Variations directed by Johanna St Michaels:
The 84-minute documentary, inspired by the poem of the same name by British-born, Los Angeles based poet John Tottenham, is centered around the Radio Cineola broadcast and within the film, through recitations of John Tottenham’s poetry, Matt Johnson examines his sometimes troubled relationship with celebrity and the creative process and, through the tragic deaths of his mother and two of his brothers, how bereavement has informed his work and outlook.
The film premiered at the Gothenburg Film Festival, and Popkultur Berlin and is set for a theatrical release in the UK on October 20th as well.
