Following the release of Made of Rain last year, their first new album since 1991, post-punk veterans The Psychedelic Furs return in advance of embarking on their long-delayed US tour in a few weeks (see dates below) with a new stand-alone single called “Evergreen.”
The release of the dark and melancholic new song is wrapped in mystery, but follows the news that the band’s guitarist John Ashton is currently battling stage 4 prostate cancer. Gail Ann Dorsey, known for her long tenure playing bass in David Bowie’s band, has created a GoFund Me page after Ashton’s wife Catherine Dewson reached out for help.
“I humbly ask you to please help my friend John Ashton and his family get through this harrowing and uncertain chapter of their lives if you are able. Your donation is the way to show your love…” Says Dorsey, “Love this way… Please spread the word.”
Perhaps by coincidence, The Bowie-esque elements that have permeated The Furs work the past four decades have never been stronger with this latest release, which sounds like the icy new wave meets baroque-industrial of the Starman’s mid-90s output 1. Outside, and Earthling, underscored by frontman Richard Butler’s powerful vocal delivery on the song.
