Robert Smith and CHVRCHES Tease Collaboration in Upcoming Single “How Not To Drown”

Is Robert Smith continuing his collaboration streak? Looks that way. Earlier this year he made a contribution to the Gorillaz’ Song Machine series, Strange Timez, and has had a long history of appearing on other bands’ albums and numerous side projects (and even having his own The Glove). Over the years, Smith has lent backing vocals on The Associates’ The Affectionate Punch, wrote “Torment” for Marc and the Mambas, as well as worked with Siouxsie as an official member of The Banshees. He also did vocals for Crystal Castles’ single “Not in Love”, performed live with David Bowie on his 50th birthday, and even did a duet with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. Now, it could be CHVRCHES’ turn.

In a series of cryptic tweets, the Cure frontman playfully sparred with the singer for the Scottish indie-pop band’s singer Lauren Mayberry, who once proudly dressed as Smith for a 2015 Halloween costume.

In an announcement on her band’s Twitter, Mayberry announced an upcoming new single, How Not To Drown, out on the 2nd of June. Does Smith make an appearance? Seems to be confirmed by both Smith and Chvrches via their official Twitter accounts.

Smith himself has been more active on Twitter of late, recently making a David Lynch-inspired geography report on Mexico, as well as posting a performance of Siouxsie and the Banshees’ “Metal Postcard”.
Today both Smith and Chrvchs seemingly have been hinting at Smith making an appearance in the song and video for “How Not To Drown”, which makes its debut on June 2nd.
