Rising Synth-pop Stars Korine Warm the Heart with “Sunshine”

Philadelphia’s electropop duo Korine is parting the gloom with a shimmering, bright ray of light: Sunshine is out today. A gentle anthem for those who have endured hardship, Korine delivers the goods with authenticity and passion.

The initial spark for the song came together last year through a drum loop the band had forgotten about making. Listening with fresh ears gave Korine inspiration to take it in an unexpected direction: exploring the complexities and anxieties of the human experience, and how manifestation happens through transcending feelings of inadequacy. There is always hope. Sunshine is about overcoming a negative experience and moving into a whole new sphere of personal growth.  “People come and go from our collective lives, hopefully something is learned—whether it’s the strength or weakness of some conviction or something more mundane, every moment could be a reason to grow,” says the band.

Korine consists of members Morgy Ramone and Trey Frye. The pair blends new wave nostalgia with modern pop sensibilities, contrasting upbeat rhythms against sullen, emotionally evocative lyrics. Korine debuted with 2018’s New Arrangements (Born Losers Records). Following this release were the singles Uncrossed and To You, released Fall of 2019, marking a stylistic departure from the familiar 80s era influence to a more contemporary pop sound. Their 2020 LP, The Night We Raise, continued this sonic evolution. Korine has been a favourite of Post-Punk for some time now, making our Current Synthpop Acts You Should Know list earlier last year, and was in the top five of our best of 2020.

As art and life meet, Korine also has hosted streaming concerts during the Covid-19 era, bringing sunshine themselves to a ravaged music industry.
