Since their debut during the back half of the 80s, Pixies’ lesser-lit corners have always had a strange way of becoming central rooms in the house. The songs tucked away on flip sides and scattered singles from the band’s classic 4AD years were never mere leftovers; they were crooked little dispatches from the same fever dream that gave us Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, and Bossanova: surf rock gone septic, biblical Americana with a busted grin, noise-pop folding in on itself like a cheap motel Bible left out in the rain.
Continuing the band’s 40th anniversary celebrations, Complete B-Sides: 1988-97 by Pixies is being reissued 25 years after its initial release, out June 26, 2026. Newly remastered, the compilation will be available on double black vinyl, double clear vinyl, and double CD, marking the first time the collection has been officially pressed on vinyl.
Originally released on CD in 2001, while Pixies were almost a decade into their hiatus, Complete B-Sides gathered 19 tracks from the band’s 1988–1991 4AD era, including beloved off-road classics such as Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf), Into The White, Bailey’s Walk, and The Thing. Heard together, they form a kind of cracked mirror to the canonical albums: familiar faces at odd angles, all brine, bile, blasted humour, and strange grace.
For Complete B-Sides: 1988-97, the tracks have been remastered from the original analogue tapes by Kevin Vanbergen, completing his extensive work across the Pixies catalogue. The original tracklisting sits neatly across three sides of vinyl, while the fourth side adds six bonus live recordings drawn from later Pixies single releases, including the 1997 re-release of Debaser.
The reissue also arrives as a companion to the band’s recent Live at the BBC compilation reissue. Designer Chris Bigg of v23 has created new artwork using photographs from Simon Larbalestier’s archive, originally considered for Pixies use before being shelved. Both long-term collaborators worked across the two reissues in tandem, remembering and honouring the band’s late visual director, Vaughan Oliver, whose visual language remains inseparable from the strange charge of Pixies’ 4AD years.
