Philadelphia Indie-Janglewave Artist Plastic Ivy Debuts Synth-laden Concert Film

Philadelphia’s “indie janglewave” artist Plastic Ivy is returning to the fold with a thrilling new joint release: a half-hour performance film released digitally and in limited VHS format. The soundtrack release is slated to come out on cassette and digital as well.

Concert Film is a minimalist, literary krautrock joy: the simple synth backdrop of tracks like Ode (In Advance Of Loss) off 2020’s Spots of Time is highlighted with complex layers, expansive and experimental. Where the icy synths could otherwise leave listeners in the cold, the emotive vocals of Plastic Ivy’s Lira Marie Landes melt through with her warm, earnest expression. Landes varies moods and tempos to spectacular results, channeling the ethereal synthwork of Alan Wilder-era Depeche Mode and, of course, Kraftwerk.
Here is the video, directed by Daniel James Shields. It bounces between pure performance and conceptual minimalism, an austere portrait of the artist, dwelling in the limbo of lockdown.
