Parisian Darkwave Duo Echoberyl Wander Through a Black & White Daydream in “Rectangle”

Parisian darkwave duo Echoberyl wander through a black and white daydream in their spellbinding video for “Rectangle”—a track culled from their fantastic debut album Apparition.

The song is slow, pulsing, and introspective, driven by bass synths, drum machines, and jangling guitars, with all the atmosphere evoked by sonic allusions to its French cold wave forbearers.

Vocalist Cecilia Dassonneville, who stars in the video, gives us some background on the project:

“Adriano writes and produces the music, Ari Todero writes the lyrics, I sing and I make videos. I answered to an ad Adriano published on a french music mag in march 2018. We share our passion for cinema, some 80s music, art, photography …

We started rehearsing and recording in September, then we took a pause because I was busy at a theatre show that premiered in December. Then, during the new eve holidays, we spent two weeks in Rome writing with Ari and intensively recording in Ari’s beautiful Sonus Factory studio. Our first album, “Apparition”, is about fragility, cry of pain and hope of appeasement. It was released on July 27th, on the label Swiss Dark Nights.”

About the video for “Rectangle” Cecilia adds:

“We shot it in March, at the Temple of Flora (Villa Ada, Rome), an abandoned place dated from the 19th century we found the day before by chance. Adriano shot under my direction some very simple actions I had written the night before and in two days we had all the necessary material. Then, in July I edited the video.

I wrote Rectangle as a dream: strange, illogical but emotional. A young woman wanders in her mind; the ruined temple is a metaphor of a hidden part of her. She is looking for some answer she could find from her past, but she is eventually disappointed: “ashes won’t set a clear design”.
