Nowave, Industrial, and Synthpop Collide in Donzii’s New Single “On The Inside”

DOnzii charges forward on a collision course where angular post-punk precision meets no-wave funk and industrial bite. Initially, the band conjured their quirky sounds in the crucible of a crumbling 1970s-era Miami mansion. Now operating out of Los Angeles, the core duo—vocalist Jenna Balfe and multi-instrumentalist Dennis Fuller—steer their namesake (borrowed from an Italian speedboat, with an extra “i” for good measure) through uncharted waters, accompanied by a revolving roster of musical collaborators.

Their latest single, On The Inside, co-written and produced by genre-shapeshifter Jorge Elbrecht (Sky Ferreira, Wild Nothing), tightens the screws. Equal parts industrial stomp and synth-pop sway, it sees Balfe’s vocals slink with the sultry sharpness of Deborah Harry or Lizzy Mercier Descloux: aloof yet alluring. Guitars stab, synths glisten, and beneath it all thrums a restless current.

Lyrically, On The Inside grapples with internal cages and external chaos: doors swinging open, strange new spaces beckoning. Longing, loss, and life’s unpredictable lurches course beneath the surface. Yet amidst existential unease, Donzii deliver a track built for bodies in motion, transforming confinement into kinetic release. A restless anthem for anyone itching to step outside themselves, or at least sweat it out under neon lights.

The tumultuous path to Donzii’s first full-length release featured numerous lineup changes, musical metamorphoses, a passionate love story between Balfe and Fuller, and, as they succinctly describe it, “principled denials of industry rot.” Donzii continues to defy convention and explore new musical territories, building on the foundation laid during those formative jam sessions in 2015.
