The mysterious masked mastermind, Lunacy, returns with his haunting new single, “Universal Pressure.” With the epic waves of sound Lunacy is known for, the track immerses the listener into a dystopian reality—one that’s cavernous and thick with fog. “Universal Pressure”‘s beat, either a ticking time bomb or a slow-thumping heart, keeps the increasing tension from boiling over while metallic industrial noise writhes and collides with darkwave synth pads. The resulting sound is somewhere between Skinny Puppy’s Bite interludes and the distant hum of machinery.
Caught between the darkest of night and the purple haze of daybreak, Lunacy’s ability to build upon layers of fuzz and sustained notes generate an anxiety that’s quelled by the softness of the song’s cascading warmth. With “Universal Pressure,” there’s opportunity for a change—a solace found in the abyss of uncertainty: “Sometimes the thoughts of restlessness and just the unknown, tend to wash over the good or the bad—it’s just the unknown. Ultimately boiling down to taking the easy way is a cop-out—taking the long road might hurt you, or it might be safe, who knows – in the end it is your mind that is going to get the best of you.”
After his Echo in the Memory LP from 2022, Lunacy’s Universal Pressure EP further demonstrates the artist’s ability to intersect genres and resist the boundaries within them. Watch the video for the title track below.
Lunacy will be on tour in Europe and the Northeastern US starting May 30th in Prauge and wrapping up on June 23rd in Washington D.C.—dates below.
