Los Angeles Post-Punk Trio Automatic Debut Animated Video for “Automaton”

Los Angeles retrofuturist motorik pop trio Automatic (Izzy Glaudini, Lola Dompé, Halle Saxon) announce their first headlining North American tour in support of their acclaimed new album, Excess.

To mark this, they’ve shared a wonderful new video for “Automaton”, created by Yana Pan and Jenny Nirgends, using paper-cut animations to illustrate one automaton’s journey to break from the pack and create something new.

“Automaton is about having to deprogram yourself from capitalist ways of thinking, but, of course, we framed the song in our sci-fi theme – with an actual automaton as protagonist,” says the band. The track is extremely catchy – a delightful way to go down with the proverbial ship as Gen-Z takes an ailing planet for its test spin.

Watch the video for ‘Automaton” below

Automatic’s new album Excess rides the imaginary edge where the ‘70s underground met the corporate culture of the ‘80s: “…that fleeting moment when what was once cool quickly turned and became mainstream all for the sake of consumerism,” the band explains. “This becomes the starting point for an exploration into the consequences of such excess – namely, the fact that Gen Z will inherit the world at the eleventh hour. Combining its urgent message with catchy pop hooks, Excess is tight and punchy: danceable music for the end of days.”
Excess is out now via Stones Throw.
Automatic will kick off an extensive crisscrossing tour with an NYC performance at Rough Trade’s Indieplaza Festival, before heading back to Los Angeles to open for Bauhaus at The Greek Theatre. From there, they hit Desert Daze and carry on to headline Brooklyn’s Market Hotel and Chicago’s Empty Bottle, followed by Toronto, Montreal, Nashville, and the Levitation Festival in Austin.
