Kent Duo debdepan Cook Up Whimsy in Their Video for “The Goat”

Debdepan, a rising duo from Kent’s rich music scene, has released their latest offering, “The Goat,” as part of their forthcoming new release: the OMEN EP. Comprised of two talented women, debdepan utilizes their avant-garde harmonies and a grounded spirit to create a unique and otherworldly sound.

Long-standing allies from childhood, Chelsea Tolhurst (the voice and strings behind their melodic narrative) and Grace Bontoft (laying down resonant bass lines and adding in sublime backing vocals) breathed life into the band amidst the seclusion of 2020’s lockdown. The exigency to articulate their shared experiences and shape the soundscape they longed to hear was a spark that ignited their creative endeavor. Both Tolhurst, an adept guitar player and vocalist, and Bontoft, a talented bassist, have been lauded for their effervescent ingenuity – with a knack for crafting a song from dawn and bringing it to life under the evening’s spotlight.

Their latest creation, “The Goat,” is a melodic chiaroscuro, drawing inspiration from the likes of Warpaint and Marika Hackman’s dreamy textures, The Cure’s moody undertones, and the gritty realism of PJ Harvey.

The accompanying music video, a brainchild of director Joe Haines, takes us on a whimsical, surrealist journey, showcasing the duo indulging in playful culinary chaos. Amidst the antics of a food fight, a Puck-like figure emerges, its presence seemingly an allegory for the unpredictable impishness that can puncture an otherwise pleasant atmosphere.

This mischievous entity interrupts an idyllic afternoon dedicated to brownie baking, introducing a sprinkle of mild malevolence into the mix. The DIY approach of the video adds a layer of authenticity to its narrative, marrying the band’s grassroots ethos with the fantasy-filled universe of their music.

Harnessing the stillness of the lockdown period, Debdepan came to life in March 2022, swiftly gracing the stage with their debut performances. Their unique sound and potential did not go unnoticed, catching the discerning ear of Pie Factory Music’s Emerging Artists programme. This auspicious encounter served as the launchpad for their inaugural single, “Darkest Hour,” which saw light under the Wantsum Music? label on the 16th of September 2022. After playing shows further afield than their native Kent and recording more songs, their priority is to continue growing their audience.

In a whirlwind of events, the duo soon inked their names into a publishing and label agreement with the esteemed Archangelo Music, under the stewardship of Daryl Bamonte.

“The Goat” is available on all platforms from 25th July 2023 on Bamala Newtown through Danmark Music Group distribution.

Their upcoming release, “Omen,” is a three-track EP that traverses various genres. Bontoft describes it as “a self-reflective collection which explores themes of growing up and discovering who you are, through relationships and making mistakes.”

The EP will be released on 25th July 2023 through Bamala Newtown, accompanied by a series of live performances in London and Kent.
