Joy Division, New Order, and Kate Bush Nominated for 2023 Rock and Rock Hall of Fame

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has just unveiled 14 nominees for its Class of 2023, including a combo nomination for both Joy Division and New Order. Also nominated are Kate Bush, Soundgarden, Rage Against the Machine, The White Stripes, Cyndi Lauper, Missy Elliot, Warren Zevon, and more.

Also on the ballot this year are Sheryl Crow, A Tribe Called Quest, Iron Maiden, George Michael, Willie Nelson, and The Spinners.

The Rock Hall website describes the joint nomination of Joy Division, and New Order, the latter band born following the suicide of frontman Ian Curtis. as such:

“Joy Division and New Order: two bands that share a single story. It is the remarkable tale of innovative musicians who created something revolutionary and massively influential, not once, but twice. They were gothic-rock pioneers who became electronic dance-floor innovators and a beacon for thousands of bands that followed.”

From now through April 28th, fans are now able to vote for their choice of nominees on The Rock Hall’s website. From these, five fan-chosen finalists will comprise a single ballot that will be included alongside the voting membership tally in deciding the final Class of 2023 inductees.

Eligibility for artists to be nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame begins 25 years after their first release. While, Kate Bush had previously been nominated in 2017, 2021, and 2022, this is the first nomination for both Joy Division, and New Order.

Last year, as far as new wave bands are concerned, the Rock Hall of Fame inducted Duran Duran and Eurythmics, while The Go-Go’s and Kraftwerk were part of the Class of 2021. In 2020, the Cleveland institution welcomed Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode, and in 2019, The Cure were inducted alongside Radiohead, Roxy Music, Janet Jackson, and more.

The final announcement of inductees is expected to be announced in late spring following the Rock Hall’s membership votes, with the induction ceremony anticipated to occur sometime during the autumn.
