Indie-Darkwave Duo Mall Daze Unveil Their Moody and Minimalist Video for “Ten Favorites”

Alaskan indie-pop wizards Tyrell Tompkins and Kipp Riley (Lavoy) have changed their sonic direction with a new project called Mall Daze, pitting an indie cynicism against the backdrop of a darker dream pop fragility. Their new single, Ten Favorites, off their upcoming album Ash House, is a moody, minimalist black and white piece highlighting the raw sound of first-take vocals, a heapin’ helping of reverb, and that euphoric feeling of a late night/early morning drive home. The video for Ten Favorites was filmed in Spokane by Ira Dern (Rose Throw; Darien Mack).

The band settled on the track’s bass line first, and the song wove together around it.”It feels kind of new wave or 70’s punk to me, and it just reminded me of driving at night with windows down. I hearken back to leaving my girlfriend’s (now my wife) house as a teen, daydreaming about a future with cool friends…and nothing but this soundtrack to your life pocket of (ten favorite) songs that are only right at a perfect time of a late dusk sort of evening.”

Watch the video for “Ten Favorites”, filmed in Spokane, WA by the incomparable IRA DERN (AKA ROSE THROW, AKA DARIEN MACK)  below:

Mall Daze is set to release their debut album, Ash House, on the 16 October.

The band can be found on Instagram and Twitter
