Gothic songstress Caroline Blind (Sunshine Blind) returns with a brand-new single, “Cold”, featuring regular co-writer and guitarist Rich Witherspoon (The Wake). Breaking from the folk noir-meets-triphop tone of last year’s album The Spell Between, Cold continues further down a guitar-driven gothic rock trail. Witherspoon’s distinctive textural guitar style brings elements of shoegaze, hook-driven 90s Britpop, and swirling psychedelia to the mix.
The collaborators have since appeared on each other’s albums: Rich was a prominent contributor to Blind’s 2020 solo debut, The Spell Between; Blind contributed backing vocals to a bonus track for The Wake’s Perfumes and Fripperies.
“Cold was the first song Rich and I wrote together,” says Blind. “That was the first time we’d spoken since the 1990s, when The Wake used to stay at the Sunshine Blind house in NJ…After just a few days, he sent me the music for this song, and I loved it immediately. It took me a day to write lyrics and send it back, and right then, we knew we had a great songwriting chemistry. Everything happened so organically, and we surprised ourselves by doing some of our best work…although we both got swept up in our respective album releases, we knew we had to come back to this song. We managed to find our way back to each other after many years to write it, and now, after three more years, we’ve come full circle and found our way back again.”
Caroline Blind’s latest EP, 2021’s Tribe (The Remixes), features a star-studded cast of notorious guitar slingers, including Ben Christo (The Sisters of Mercy, Diamond Black, PIG); Andee Blacksugar (KMFDM, Blondie, Black Sugar Transmission, Peter Murphy); and Mark Gemini Thwaite (Peter Murphy, Gary Numan, The Mission). Blind’s next appearance is as vocalist and one half of new downtempo electronica duo, Voidant, alongside beloved UK post-punk stalwart David ‘Wolfie’ Wolfenden (Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Mission, Expelaires, Rose of Avalanche). Voidant’s debut single, La Loba, is set to drop any day now.
Shot against the New York skyline, the heady and delirious clip for cold, directed by filmmaker/visual artist Tintin is a trippy, icy feast for the eyes, an intimate portrait of the singer roaming the streets at night.
