Los Angeles-based band FEARING is a riveting embodiment of the dark post-punk aesthetic. The brainchild of James Rogers and Brian Vega, two multifaceted producers, the band’s roots trace back to their early friendship forged amidst the raucous energy of hardcore shows in Reno, Nevada.
Years later, after a decade steeped in touring with various bands, the duo converged again in Oakland, California. This time, their shared affinity for the immersive depths of darkwave and the pulsating rhythms of electronic music breathed life into FEARING. The second album, appropriately titled Destroyer, is set to be released this autumn on September 29th, just in time for the Season of the Witch.
Today, they pull back the curtain on their first single from the album, “I Was So Alive.” The track, an enigmatic blend of introspective darkness and shimmering optimism, is a tantalizing glimpse into what the band’s sophomore effort promises.
“I Was So Alive” unveils a fresh facet of FEARING’s artistry, with the core trio tenderly cultivating their unique darkwave stamp. This track is a bold voyage into auditory landscapes that beautifully balance contrasting tones—pairing the sombre and stark with the vibrant and vivacious.
The song showcases a variety of shifts and bewitching melodies that evoke a sense of urgency. It’s a refreshing departure from the band’s typical ominous atmosphere drenched with reverb, highlighting their musical skill and creativity.

With Destroyer, FEARING presents an evocative portrait of oceanic desolation, offering listeners an exploration into the darker depths of their sound. The album pulsates with newfound energy, brought to life by a streamlined three-piece ensemble and a minimalist auditory approach. As if testing the tension between shadows and light, the album deftly navigates the liminal space between pop and dark music, imbuing it with an urgency that sets it apart from their prior works.
FEARING initially started as a four-person band, including acoustic drums. However, they have since transformed into a mesmerizing hybrid synth/guitar trio, with Joey Camello on guitar. Their debut EP, A Life Of None, came out in 2017. The following year, they released the Black Sand EP, which was well-received. FEARING has been able to maintain a steady stream of releases, thanks to their hard work and engaging live shows. They have also shared the stage with notable artists like Gatecreeper, Soft Kill, Choir Boy, Narrow Head, and Death Bells. They have also performed at notable festivals like Substance, Home Sick, and Out From The Shadows.
FEARING’s newest album, Destroyer, was recorded by the band, mixed by Chris King (Cold Showers), and mastered by Dan Lowndes of Resonance Sound. The band is set to perform later this year, sharing the stage with artists like Portrayal of Guilt and Cold Gawd, in support of Destroyer. Destroyer is set to be released on September 29th, via Profound Lore.
