Darkwave and Dreampop Collide in Midi Memory’s New Single “Angel of Death”

Hailing from the citrusy streets of Orlando, Matt Messore, known for his work as the carillonneur of Cathedral Bells, ushers us into the latest chapter of his sonic narrative with his project: Midi Memory. Venturing deep into the enigmatic world of darkwave and intertwining with the mesmerizing charm of synth-driven dream-pop, he crafts an atmosphere with the warm richness of Roland’s analogue synths and pulsating drum patterns. His tracks meld luminous with shadowy tones, capturing a stark yet intriguing contrast.

In an ironic twist, Midi Memory’s “Angel of Death” (now available via Born Losers Records) presents itself as a track that’s aurally the antithesis of grim, at least upon first listen. Its deceptively cheerful guitar strings and upbeat tempo might mislead a fleeting listener. However, beneath the surface, the song delves into existential turmoil. What at first seemed joyful now falls away like autumn leaves, leaving something beautiful, yet bittersweet.

This song isn’t just a jangly dream pop tune; it’s a poetic juxtaposition. While its exterior gleams with a carefree aura, the lyrics inside harbor haunting musings reminiscent of midnight introspections. Rather than falling in line with the usual brooding darkwave tones of today, it shines as a beacon of hope breaking through a soul’s darkest hour. It’s a song where nostalgia and modernity dance gracefully, even when confronting the theme of mortality. So, while it might make you tap your foot, be prepared: your soul will be stirred.

Let yourself be lulled by the reaper with the karaoke video for “Angel of Death” below:

Midi Memory channels a unique blend of post-punk, echoing the timeless essence of icons like Black Marble, Molchat Doma, and OMD. Yet, this project carves its niche, spinning tales wrapped in dreamy, otherworldly sounds.

The band’s upcoming album, Far Gone and Out, will be released on January 11th, 2024, via Born Losers Records.
