By now, we are all familiar with—and fans of—Curses’ Next Wave Acid Punx series. The well-received first and second compilations (and Secret Cuts EP) focused on bridging gap between the past and future while featuring tracks from classic artists (Nitzer Ebb, Cabaret Voltaire) to new artists from around the world. EBM to industrial, acid to italo body music, each release has mapped out the connections between dance genres, all amassing in the neon-soaked lights of the club floor.
Curses, the Berlin by way of NYC producer, DJ and curator, just announced the next installation of his series: Next Wave Acid Punx Revamps. The EP features two revamps from Curses and one from the Melbourne-based Stockholm Syndrome and NYC’s Andi—with all tracks hailing from the late 1980s. “This was a pivotal moment where all genres were still evolving, figuring out what sounds would eventually become staple elements of one another which gave it all this naive, innocent and punk feel,” explains Curses. “You’ve got Trance arpeggios, those heavy snares of early EBM, chopped vocals in the style of Chicago and NY formative House music all mixed with Electrofunk and percussive Latin freestyle grooves. A time when we were dancing without boundaries, something very much in the spirit of Next Wave Acid Punx.”
Each revamp—whose originals hold a permanent place in a digger’s record bag—splices up. dissects, and reformulates the tracks in order to add a new momentum. Curses’ rework of J.W.B. Hits the Beat’s “House Fatale” proves just that with its upbeat tempo and pulsating rhythm. On top of housey vocals, hip-house raps and freestyle-influenced percussion, “House Fatale” will be a refreshed staple in any energized DJ set.
Out Feb 7th, the EP will be available on vinyl and digital. Buy here.
