Last Thursday night in Manchester, former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr was invited by his lifelong friend and fellow guitar legend Billy Duffy to join his band The Cult onstage to perform the hit single “Rain,” from their 1985 album Love.
Marr himself has been known to invite Duffy on stage during his solo shows and this time saw the roles reversed. Notably, it was Duffy who encourage Marr to form the Smiths in their home town of Manchester back in 1982.
Duffy went on to introduce Marr to the crowd at the O2 Apollo Manchester as:
“An amazing musician, one of my really, really best friends from a million years ago, Mr. Johnny Marr is going to join us for a song. It’s kind of fucking special for me. I hope you really enjoy it.”
The Cult’s on currently on tour in the UK celebrating the 30th anniversary of their album Sonic Temple”.
