Berlin’s Hello Pity Explores the Darkness of Being Blind in Face of Truth with “John 9:39”

“And Jesus said, For judgement I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.” – John 9:39

Hypocrites are the subject matter of choice in the spectacular new video from Berlin’s Hello Pity. Taking on the Biblical verse discussing spiritual blindness, the song blasts the disconnection felt during the lockdown in Berlin.

“Basically, the hypocrite pretends to see and act with faith but they are actually blind to the truth happening before their own eyes,” says the band. Regarding the pandemic, “It seems like we lost something on the way and everything that was past burned away. The video reflects this alienation from oneself and the others and the loss of communication – as reflected through a pantomime and shadows that expresses feelings without words.”

The video, directed by Lucia Vagt, is a gorgeous, surreal dance into psychedelic madness. Watch below:

Hello Pity released the gritty, grunge flavored DIY tape Goodbye Genius in 2019. Their various inspirations span from folk rock to noise, which transforms their soundscapes into an artful reflection of the modern musical world. They have shared the stage with bands such as Lorelle Meets the Obsolete and The Gluts, and played the 2019 Synästhesie Festival in Berlin.

They have been working on an album during the Berlin lockdowns.
