What Is Real? asks Cologne-based act Suir, in their first single from their latest album.
Elements of dark post-punk and shoegaze meld with poetic lyrics delivered by Denis Wanic’s sultry voice: we remain focused and present during a deep personal glimpse into the thoughts of the German duo.
“What Is Real? addresses deception and disappointment of past relationships, self-doubt and questioning of one’s own perception of reality,” says the band. This ominous tale is peppered with minor chords, hypnotic drums and eerie repetition. With What Is Real, they have a rich, velvety sound bordering on the psychedelic, bringing to mind Lee Hazlewood, mixed with the early 90s Britpop stylings of alternative bands like Stone Roses, and even early Radiohead. The whipping guitars symbolize an attempt of self-liberation; those baby steps toward healing.
The single is also accompanied by a new video by artist and filmmaker PILAR GOST. It focuses upon a woman, isolated and surrounded by an interplay of light and shadow, light and dark. This highlights the contrast of perception and two-sidedness of the emotions that the lyrics of the song are about.
