The Boots are nailed down to the floors in this town
just like the stinger that has sunken in, no escape now.
New England’s You Bred Raptors emerged in 2010 from the seaside town of Weymouth, Massachusetts, cutting its teeth on parody singles and scores for indie films. Helmed by Corey Tilton, known for his work with The Workout and Jawsome, YBR thrives on genre-hopping audacity. From the ferocity of metalcore and math rock, to the punch of pop-punk to the pulsing glow of synthwave and ambient reveries, no sonic territory is off-limits for these guys.
Thematically, You Bred Raptors indulges in cinematic nostalgia, often tipping its hat to Jurassic Park and other science fiction classics. Each track becomes a playful nod to the fantastical, loaded with the weight of Tilton’s instrumental arsenal. A treasure trove of vintage synthesizers anchors the music, stitching together the disparate styles with an idiosyncratic flair.
Like A Kid That’s Found His Dad’s Gun buzzes with ferocity, a genre-defying revenge anthem that swarms the listener with synthcore, metalcore, and emo energy. Drawing comparisons to Enter Shikari, I See Stars, and Horse the Band, as well as referencing older prog rock sounds – Rush comes to mind – it delivers an electrifying sting of alternative angst and raw precision.
“Like a Kid That’s Found His Dad’s Gun is a song about responsibilities, expectations, and the overwhelming sense of existential dread that accompanies them,” says the band. The lyrics hum with the restless energy of a worker trapped in the endless rhythms of a hive. It addresses the weight of guilt, unfulfilled ambition, and the lingering pull of past choices.
Themes of endurance and fleeting hope flow through, as the narrator grapples with the tension between staying tethered to a stifling reality and daring to escape into the unknown This tale is one of relentless toil and faint dreams, seeking meaning amidst the monotony of the hive, longing to taste the light beyond its bounds, yet burdened by the ceaseless hum of obligation.
The bizarre video, directed by Kevin James with animations by Joey Deutsch, shrinks us down to the size of a bee, plunging into a world both strange and striking. Echoing the surreal charm of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and the visceral tension of The Fly, it transforms a backyard battleground into a buzzing odyssey of late-fall vengeance. In this miniature melée, a deadly leaf blower (portrayed by Ryan Murphy) becomes the villainous force. The track’s frenetic energy and the video’s wild imagination combine to deliver an unforgettable bug bite that itches for more.
