On their records, Welsh duo Plastic Estate is a formidable post-punk and synth-pop act that effortlessly exudes style and swagger, the kind you can swing your hips to. They navigate the expansive labyrinth of electronic pop with ease, conjuring the breezy sophistication of late ’70s yacht rock and the refined pop aesthetics of the mid-’80s. Their sound carries the lo-fi charm of the glo-fi/chillwave era while venturing into uncharted territories beyond.
Their latest single, “Open Eyes,” marks a departure from their earlier flirtations with the sensibilities of Aztec Camera, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, and Prefab Sprout. This new, suave synth-pop odyssey ventures into realms of sleek extravagance, a polished beacon of high-fidelity glamour, and the pulsating charisma of post-disco. This release, their first in two years, heralds a chic new direction for the New Wave pair, drenched in the shimmering allure of the California sunset via Cardiff.
Now, the duo showcases their live prowess, performing their new single “Open Eyes” live, along with “Out of Reach” and “Divinely Impaired,” two tracks from their 2022 self-titled full-length album, and their 2020 single, “This Place.” This is captured in a video from Wedge Productions, “Live At Clwb Ifor Bach.” Filmed in Cardiff on July 17th, 2023, this performance showcases the band’s electric energy and camaraderie, a testament to their synth-driven craft.
