By now, you may have already given a listen or two to Meridiane‘s debut track, the ethereal and unsettling “Deerstalking.” The project, which consists of Josh Strachan (Blacklist, Azar Swan, Vain Warr, Vaura), and crucial 4AD alumni Pieter Nooten (Clan of Xymox) and Warren Defever (His Name Is Alive), is building up momentum for their upcoming debut LP, due out in late 2021. With all of this in mind, we’re excited to premiere the visual accompaniment to “Deerstalking,” directed by Joan Pope. Watch here:
The video expands on the project’s central themes of natural beauty and haunting tranquility. The video features a shorter edit of the track, while the full eight minute version has been co-released on Spotify to coincide with the video. The subtitle texts included within the video were written by Strachan, quoting heavily from Timothy Morton’s “Subscendence” talk, which in part was inspired by fellow collaborator Bjork’s seminal track “Hyperballad.” Other points of interest include Southern Reach trilogy author Jeff Vandermeer, a friend and co-thinker of Morton’s. The sphere of influence here seeps into the alluring ethos of “Deerstalking” from top to bottom, from the music to the visuals. As such, the track still stands as one the most unique and spellbinding things we’ve heard this year.
