Watch the First Ever Footage of Bauhaus Live in Early 1979

On January 13th, 1979 Bauhaus were still performing under their original name Bauhaus 1919, referencing the founding year of the German art movement from which the band borrowed their name and logo.

For this gig, one of their earliest (the second in fact), the band played a 30 minute set at The Romany pub in Northampton performing songs like the prototype for “Largartija Nick”—”Bite My Hip”, plus “Screen Kiss”, “Lovelife”, and more.

The band were apparently not paid for this gig because “the punters did not buy enough pints”, and payment was instead negotiated via “a free lesson in martial arts”.

The video is courtesy of ‘Halfman Halftripod’ who filmed the event. Captions in the clip explain the set-up involved.
