Greek musicians Thodoris Koutsogiannis and Alexios Othon Theodoridis met at a summer festival in 2016 while playing in different bands…and decided to join forces. After a long period of experimentation and rotating members, they have perfected their unique atmospheric dark sound with their project Boxes of Blow.
They have recently released a new track called “Wall of Dreams”, off their upcoming album Dystopia (via Wave Records). The gothic-tinged song opens with a slow burner before bursting into a frenzied, disjointed explosion. There are elements reminiscent of Sisters of Mercy and Clan of Xymox with their rich resonance. The bridge of the song jumps into an emotional explosion of sound, beautifully illustrated by the contrast of open skies and frenzied dance within institutional walls.
True to the whole album, “Wall of Dreams” deals with the anxiety to find a solution to the problems of humanity. “Sometimes this anguish becomes a huge inaccessible wall; a boundary that we cannot cross, nor see beyond,” says the band. They love a metaphor: “Black rain can symbolize any catastrophe internal to our existence, or external to nature and the environment in which we live,” they explain. The song is also about the trials and tribulations of love. “…In all its elusiveness, love pushes us to stretch our limits, therefore becoming a necessary force,” they say. “A force to reach beyond, despite knowing that falling is almost certain.”
The haunting music video, directed by Press the Eject and Give Me the Tape, was filmed in the summer of 2020 on Mount Ιmmitos and at Old Sanatorio Hospital on Mount Parnitha, Attiki Greece. The exquisite choreography and dance performance in the abandoned space was done by Karen Gina Georgoudis.
