One of Obscura Undead’s favorite goth rock acts, Sonsombre, have released their latest music video for “Darker Skies”. This hit comes off their most recent album One Thousand Graves, released on Cleopatra Records this past January.
The video, shot in the high contrast, ultra-dramatic style we’ve come to love from the band, does not disappoint. Images of gravestones, crows, stormy skies, and a well that likely represents the deep pit of despair within ourselves dominate the otherwise simple imagery of the video. But however minimal the visuals are, the video conveys a sense of utter loss. All set over an undeniable goth banger that belies the song’s tragic introspective message.
According to vocalist and frontman Brandon Pybus, “Darker Skies” is actually “Matte Black” part two. “It’s about a couple that grows apart. In the video, we do represent her as leaving … but it’s a metaphor for a self-inflicted emotional withdrawal.” Visually, the music videos are similar as well, which was also a deliberate stylistic choice on the part of ol’ big brim Pybus himself.
Once again, Sonsombre beautifully inspires within us a sense of distant yearning and bleak nostalgia that makes us want to tap our toes and mopey dance.
