Ukrainian Post-Punk Duo Hungry Boys Debut Video for Title Track of their “Newdance” EP

Arising from the pulsing heart of Kyiv’s resilient music scene, post-punk duo Hungry Boys has dropped their latest mini-EP, Newdance. As an evolution from the post-punk project Gil’otina, Hungry Boys channels a distinctive blend of wave and electronic vibes, encapsulating the unwavering spirit of Ukraine’s underground music landscape.

Diving deep into their inspiration, the duo commented on the release of their first EP:

“We didn’t have any specific plans on how this EP is going to sound or feel, but nowadays, everything around you, especially in Ukraine, makes a huge impact on what you do, think or create. Newdance – is about nonstop burning matches.”

Capturing the essence of their sound, the music video for “Newdance” is a masterstroke of Kyiv-based director and photographer, Nastia Platinova. Filmed during the duo’s Berlin visit in August 2022 for the Worn Pop showcase tour, it’s an odyssey through dimly lit corridors, shadowy parking garages, and subterranean walkways. Enveloped in flickering lights and silhouettes, it reflects the haunting allure of Ukrainian post-punk. And as the narrative unfolds, the song transforms into a hypnotic dance anthem.

Newdance delves further with the vibrant beat of “BRG.” It’s a seamless synthesis – think Kraftwerk meeting Blur, seasoned with Boy Harsher, and a hint of Cabaret Voltaire, all sprinkled with ’80s synthwave nostalgia. However, the alternate “BRG” rendition offers a nocturnal spin, with muted vocals and prominent guitar undertones.

As the band explains:

“BRG has two different arrangement versions, where you can clearly catch which one is a day and which one is a night, even with identical lyrics. The same way one 24-hours set starts and another 24-hours set ends, and you are grateful that it lasts.”
