Genre-defying UK duo debdepan return with a sharpened vision, one that reclaims the charged interplay between self-possession and release, as they unveil a new single, “The Girl,” from their sophomore EP, Lovers & Others (out November 26th via Silent Kid Records). The song presents a forceful declaration: a study in contrasts that never apologizes for its raw edges or its sudden surges.
The Girl unleashes a more visceral side of debdepan’s artistry. The track weaponises jagged riffs and heavily processed vocals against a backdrop of nostalgic indie sleaze, drawing clear lines to Wet Leg’s irreverent energy while maintaining the duo’s own compelling darkness. Here, debdepan have refined their knack for contrasts: moments of deceptive calm shatter into crushing waves of sound, with razor-sharp guitars cutting through pounding rhythms in a sonic assault that feels both calculated and wildly unhinged.
The track moves like a contest of textures, where steel strikes against silk. Industrial abrasion crashes forward, tethered to Electroclash’s decadent undercurrent, while the voice lingers in the fragile space between invitation and confession. Its lineage can be traced across the cool detachment of Ladytron, the sharp edges of Franz Ferdinand, and the brooding weight of The Editors.
“Sonically this song is pretty stabby and angry,” says the band. “We wanted big guitar sounds, distorted vocals and bubbling synth lines to build tension and urgency,” the band explains. The urgency is palpable in every moment: the guitars cut sharply, the synths ripple and foam like static beneath the surface, and the vocals waver between a sneer and a confession. In this space, frustration and desire are not suppressed; instead, they are reshaped and transformed into energy that is both collective and cathartic.
The decision to record at Albion Rooms with engineer Jason Stafford emphasizes live immediacy. “We wanted to record here for a more live studio experience,” they explain. That ethos is crucial: the sound feels less like a polished product and more like an unfiltered encounter, capturing breath, collision, and sudden shifts. It’s a choice that honors chaos while keeping hold of clarity.

Written in the year since the pair relocated to Margate’s restless creative enclave, Lovers & Others looks toward friendship, desire, and the trouble of intimacy. Late nights spent in the town’s effervescent nightlife are balanced by solitary walks along the coast. The push and pull between noise and silence, exhilaration and reflection, saturates the record, grounding it in lived experience while reaching for something larger.
Since their formation in 2022, debdepan have moved quickly: Darkest Hour’s breakthrough, UK stages alongside Cumgirl8 and Miki Berenyi, a tour with Pete Doherty, and recognition across the BBC airwaves. In Ramsgate, they recorded with Mike Collins, their work later refined at London’s Strongroom by James Minas. The Girl is less a single than a collision of sound and story that points toward the ferocity of Lovers & Others.
