The Smashing Pumpkins cover The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love” at Wisconsin Gig

The Smashing Pumpkins covered The Cure’s uber-pop hit “Friday I’m In Love” at their Wisconsin Gig Wednesday night. During the rendition of the, guitarist James Iha performed lead vocals in this charming version of the Wish era song that originally saw its release in 1992, back when the Pumpkins only had Gish under their belt.

Watch the fan shot footage below.

The choice of cover is a bit odd, given the fact that Peter Hook’s son Jack Bates is a member of The Smashing Pumpkins now, and that “Friday I’m in Love” has the lyric “I don’t care if Monday’s blue”, which has long been rumoured to have been written by Cure frontman Robert Smith as barb thrown during long running feud with New Order, which ended with the departure of New Order’s founding bass player.

Regardless, as NME points out, The Smashing Pumpkins will be joining The Cure, as headliners of Portugal’s NOS Alive Festival next summer.

Also during the Wisconsin gig,  the Pumpkins dusted off their cover of Depeche Mode‘s “Never Let Me Down Again”.

The Smashing Pumpkins are continuing to perform select dates on their current tour with Drab Majesty as the opening Act.

Deb and Mona from Drab Majesty recently made cameos in the Pumpkins’ video for “Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts)”.
