Last night at The Smashing Pumpkins 30th anniversary gig at the PNC Bank Center in New Jersey, several guests musicians joined Billy Corgan and Co onstage to perform covers of classic post-punk songs from the catalogs of Joy Division and New Order.
None other than Peter Hook himself performed all these remarkably good post-punk covers, starting with a rendition of his former band New Order’s “Age of Consent”.
AFI’s Davey Havok was the next special guest, joining the band onstage for a performance of “Transmission”.
This was followed by Courtney Love, who had earlier in the night performed Hole’s “Celebrity Skin”, and the classic Pumpkins anthem “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”, joining Hook, Havok, and Corgan onstage with a cover of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, before the the Pumpkins went on to their final encore.
Despite this being the first official time the cover was performed by The Smashing Pumpkins, Corgan had previously joined Peter Hook onstage at the Metro in Chicago on September 23rd, 2011 to cover the classic post-punk track.
