The Replacements 1985 Album “Tim” to Receive Deluxe Edition Reissue This Fall

Great news for fans of The Replacements! This autumn, the band’s legendary album from 1985, “Tim,” which marked their first release with a major recordand the last appearance of guitarist Bob Stinson, is receiving a deluxe reissue. The reissued set features a newly remixed version of the album, along with previously unreleased alternative takes, demos, and a live show from 1986 that has never been made public before.

The first two discs of the Tim: Let It Bleed Edition contain a newly curated “definitive mix” of Tim. This mix is created by Ed Stasium, a producer/engineer who worked closely with the original album’s producer, Tommy Ramone (also known as Tom Erdelyi). Listeners can also enjoy a remastered version of Erdelyi’s original mix, which revitalizes this timeless classic.

Rhino Records has shared that the collection is housed in a 12×12 hardcover book, featuring never-before-seen photos and liner notes written by Replacements’ biographer Bob Mehr. The new cover art is inspired by Moshe Brakha’s 1985 photo of the band practicing in their Minneapolis space. Additionally, the box set includes a 180-gram vinyl pressing of the revitalized Stasium mix of Tim.

Listen to the refreshed interpretation of “Left of the Dial” below:

The third disc on this “Let It Bleed” edition of “Tim”, intriguingly titled Sons of No One: Rare & Unreleased, offers an assembly of 15 tracks, with 11 of them being an unprecedented reveal. This includes “buried treasures” from the band’s January 1985 recording session under the guidance of Big Star’s Alex Chilton. Expect alternate renditions of “Hold My Life,” “Can’t Hardly Wait,” and “Bastards of Young,” along with a distinctive and unheard original track, “Havin Fun,” penned by Tommy Stinson and performed by Paul Westerberg.

The fourth disc, bearing the title Not Ready for Prime Time, reveals a live recording straight from the soundboard of a 28-song performance at Chicago’s Cabaret Metro on January 11, 1986. This one-off concert occurred just a week prior to the band’s appearance on Saturday Night Live. It showcases renditions of band favourites, a handful of hidden gems, and a rare lead vocal performance from the late Stinson, covering “The Crusher” by Minnesota’s own garage rock outfit, The Novas.

Rhino Records is set to release the extensive 65-track Tim: Let It Bleed Edition on September 22nd. Pre-orders are currently available through the label. Those who pre-order now through Rhino will receive a 7-inch single of “Nowhere is My Home” featuring the previously unreleased “Cello Version” of “Can’t Hardly Wait” on the B-side.
