The Psychedelic Furs Promise New Album Next Year and Debut Live New Song “The Boy That Invented Rock & Roll”

Post-punk veterans The Psychedelic Furs have been frequently touring over the past decade,  recently performing greatest-hits sets during concerts in Europe and North America.

New material has been scarce however since The Furs reformed in 2000. With the only new studio recording since then being “Alive (For Once in My Lifetime)” which was included on their 2001 live reunion album Beautiful Chaos: Greatest Hits Live.

Until now, the only other new song featured in the band’s repertoire is a number called “Little Miss World”, played nearly 100 times on tour between 2012 and 2018, but as of yet to have a proper studio version released.

Now, at recent shows on the band’s current tour with James, fans have been treated to another new composition: “The Boy That Invented Rock & Roll”.

Richard Butler and Co. debuted the new song at a July 12 performance at The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City. After the break for applause, Butler thanked the crowd and announced, “We have a new album coming out next year and that’ll be on it.”

According to setlist.fm. The band has since performed the song four more times.

A new album from The Psychedelic Furs would be the band’s first in 29 years, following the 1991 release of World Outside, which featured the hit single “Until She Comes.”

For the past 5 years Frontman Richard Butler and his brother Tim, the band’s bassist, have been discussing recording a new Psychedelic Furs.

In 2014 Tim Butler told The Mercury newspaper in Pottstown, Pennsylvania:

“We are actually working on a new album, but we’re doing it on our own time frame,”

“If we start pressuring ourselves too much, we might get back into the same feeling of not liking the band. We hope to have it out early next year.”

Meanwhile, The Furs continue their co-headling North American tour with James.
