Members of Joy Division Discuss the Cover Art for “Unknown Pleasures”

Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris have come together in Episode 2 of the Joy Division: Transmissions interview series, videos where the Manchester post-punk legends celebrate their iconic debut album Unknown Pleasures 40th anniversary, which just had a special edition ruby reissue.

In this episode, both Hooky and Morris discuss the fact that the band ironically did not believe in merchandise, especially t-shirts, whereas Sumner discusses how he found the artwork provided to graphic designer Peter Saville, by discovering the plotting of pulsar CP1919 in the Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Astronomy, feeling inspired by his love of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Watch the clip below:

Previously, in our own animated video, we talked in depth about what CP1919 is, and how it was discovered. However, in that video, we had mistakenly stated that Stephen Morris had found the artwork, instead of Sumner.
