THE HOLY WOW Shuns Fake Perfection With “Brand New Like U”

“We have to bow to someone, someone to make us feel brand new”

THE HOLY WOW recently released a new single, entitled Brand New Like U, off their EP, Dilemma. The track embodies “the feeling of isolation in a big city, while everyone strives towards the Fake Perfection.” It is a timely release, as quarantine and isolation have all but forced Western society into this very crisis of identity. It’s a rollicking journey through hell with Wild’s Dave Vanian-like crooning and an eerie hook that hits the sweet spot.

THE HOLY WOW is a music project started by Russian-born, New York raised, California grown Dmitry Wild. THE HOLY WOW lays down stylistic hooks in their own version of New Wave mixed with garage and post-punk, with big anthemic choruses. The HOLY WOW’s sound is reminiscent of early Jesus and Mary Chain and the Cramps, but with Brand New Like U the band’s sound incorporates the stadium-friendly, retro-flavored power pop of early 2000s Franz Ferdinand and The Editors.

Since his teenage years, Wild has collaborated with Table Dreams, Wild Things (a band he formed with his wife Jennifer Claroscura of the Peruvian cult band Electro-Z), Bay Area goth band Weapons of the Future, and Wizard Sex.

After meeting indie sound producer, Vladimir Komarov, (PunkTV /Hot Zex) and citing similar musical tastes, they started working together under the moniker, WOW!. Komarov helped to solidify and record their first EP at Smashing Pumpkins Guitarist’s (James Iha’s) studio, Statosphere Sound.

After witnessing his father’s illness and subsequent death in 2011, Wild shelved his collaborative projects and focused on total creative control. Komarov’s departure from the project led Wild to reform the remaining ideas for a new set of songs.

“I added the word HOLY before WOW! to make it a combination of two words that represent opposite concepts, HOLY meaning something sacred, and WOW! being the most popular word used to every day to describe something exciting and yet a very commercial word, therefore giving a nod to pop music,” says Wild.

The lineup rotates but currently features keyboard Peter Breed (keys), Gary French (bass), Dmitry Wild (guitar/vox) and an occasional appearance by drummer Leo Freire.

Wild hopes to release this single of songs, with a goal of opening for other bigger bands while touring In Europe.
