Your fading smile
Hurting me inside
You’ve made it very clear
Otherwise I won’t be standing here
Swiss duo Veil of Light takes a heartfelt dive into synthpop romance with their latest single, “Stay Stay Stay,” from their newest album, “Hymns of Faith and Trust,” released via Young & Cold Records (YCR 187). Echoing the synth-driven charm of New Order and the sophisticated pop sensitivity of Pet Shop Boys, the track bursts forth with lush orchestral stabs, engaging synth hooks, and a spirited vocal interplay between Michael Ho and guest vocalist Belia Winnewisser.
Although its melodies shimmer with upbeat charm, the lyrics offer a rich and contemplative reflection on emotional vulnerability and regret. Themes of personal accountability and longing for reconciliation unfold with tender honesty, providing depth and contrast to the buoyant instrumentation. It’s a song that manages to marry thoughtful emotional introspection with effervescent synthpop sensibilities.
Filmed amidst the elegant geometry of Barcelona’s Piscines Bernat Picornell during the band’s recent Spanish tour, the video captures Veil of Light within a space steeped in Olympic history. Renowned as the venue for swimming and water polo competitions at the 1992 Summer Olympics, it infuses the visuals with a compelling blend of nostalgia and understated grandeur. The architectural elegance perfectly complements the band’s poised and polished presence, amplifying the track’s atmosphere of bittersweet reflection. The relaxed, detached demeanor of the band juxtaposes intriguingly with the determined, performative artistry of the swimmer, adding depth and playful contrast to the visual narrative.
Stay Stay Stay is undeniably Veil of Light at their peak: a sleek, spirited gem that balances vibrant melodies with emotional resonance, demonstrating their continued excellence in crafting memorable and thoughtfully expressive synthpop.
