Surreal Synthpop Artist Hermidgets Faces the Panopticon in the Artistic Video for “We Tend to Disappear”

He’s been acting kind of funny in the latter days,
do they know how useless prayer is?
I can feel it lurking out there waiting for me,
cause something dark is coming, but I don’t really know.

In Hermidgets’ pocket universe, identity fades like mist at dawn, leaving only the music, pure and untainted, for you to hold and to cherish. Now they unleash the video for their latest single, We Tend To Disappear, from their brand new album Nihil. The song, like the entire album, presents itself as an anthem to nihilism, not as a rejection of values, but rather as an opportunity.

In We Tend to Disappear, Hermidgets masterfully blends their distinctive style of dark and melancholic synth-pop with profound introspection. The song pays homage to our ability to navigate the complexities of existence, embracing the absurdity of life and our finitude, while maintaining a sense of profound wisdom. In creating both the track and the album, Hermidgets opted for a more essential approach, using a pair of analog synthesizers, a stable pattern of drum samples, and their own voice. The limitation of resources served as a stimulus for the creative process, despite the infinite possibilities offered by electronic music.

The lyrics reflect on someone behaving strangely, questioning the efficacy of prayer amidst an impending darkness. They acknowledge their mistakes and the inevitability of vanishing despite efforts. They accept their flaws, admitting they can’t lie or escape the past, and confront the harsh reality that, like a wounded bird, they are grounded.

The accompanying video is a celebration of video art, where Hermidgets enchants viewers through plays of light, shadow, and intimate close-ups. Adding further depth to the nihilistic yet consoling message is the serene yet intense face of a young girl, serving as an alter ego. This allows the artist to convey their message while preserving anonymity.

The video immerses us in the realm of surveillance voyeurism. We observe a figure through the lenses of various security cameras in ubiquitous locations: a store, a train track, public spaces. Despite the pervasive presence of surveillance, the figure remains enigmatic, a mystery untouched by constant observation.

In the twilight of their craft, Hermidgets stands as a figure both seen and unseen. Their music, a blend of shadow and light, whispers of dreams half-remembered and futures yet to be. With fingers that dance upon keys, Hermidgets conjures worlds where melancholy and beauty entwine, each note a step beyond the veil of the ordinary

Both the song and the album are entirely written and performed by Hermidgets, who also oversees the production of their videos, embracing the DIY ethos in their artistic endeavors.
