I’m forced to overcome, wandering alone.
The chimera of disease chills me to the bone.
I’m not made out of stone.
Alibi for being ill.
Sir Petrol’s debut single, Made Out Of Stone, dives headfirst into the obsessive corridors of hypochondria, spinning a musical fever dream from Parma-born Rebecca Magri’s rich imagination. Blending trip rock and psychedelia with subtle shades of alt-pop and jazz undertones, Magri juxtaposes rough-hewn, aggressive textures with delicately smooth vocals, achieving an otherworldly balance.
Magri, as Sir Petrol, becomes an astral judge whose music slices through pretense, observing the existential unease simmering beneath the world’s polished veneer. Made Out Of Stone maps the anxious terrain of imagined illness, articulating the quiet horror of hypochondria…each perceived symptom an omen of irreversible doom. The lyrics depict an internal struggle —a silent scream against mortality and isolation —emphasizing the fragility that binds humanity. Rather than merely illustrating these fears, the song attempts an exorcism through satirical exaggeration, simultaneously trivializing and acknowledging paranoia’s power. Influences range from Jack White’s raw spontaneity, Portishead’s otherworldly elegance, Lana Del Rey’s lush despair, and Queens of the Stone Age’s controlled chaos, which all converge in Sir Petrol’s sound, a celestial observer chronicling Earth’s endless follies and frailties.
Miyagi Studios’ surrealist video vividly captures this psychological battle with a twist of dark humour reminiscent of Dennis Potter’s The Singing Detective. Set within a nightmarish hospital, the scene unfolds into a Kafkaesque labyrinth teeming with creeping dread and sinister, looming figures—serving as a stark cautionary tale for those who dare to peer beneath their psychological bandages. Manuel Bongiovanni portrays Sir Petrol’s subconscious dread, bound helplessly in a makeshift surgical theatre. The chilling medical staff, portrayed with clinical detachment by Domiziana Pelati, Silvia Peli, and Stefano Canali, surgically remove his liver as a stark metaphor for paranoia’s corrosive power. Hastily stitched back together, Bongiovanni frantically attempts to escape, traversing corridors that echo the infinite loops of his own troubled mind, only to be ultimately absorbed into the very structure itself. Assimilated into the medical threat, he embraces paranoia as inevitable, cyclical, and disturbingly human—setting the stage for another patient and a renewed cycle of dread.
Made Out Of Stone stands as Sir Petrol’s fearless confrontation with the hidden terrors of hypochondria, simultaneously unsettling and irresistibly hypnotic. Definitely rethink that next doctor’s appointment.
