Sumner, Hook, and Morris Share Memories of Their First Reactions to “Unknown Pleasures”

Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Stephen Morris have come together in Episode 3 of the Joy Division: Transmissions interview series, videos where the Manchester post-punk legends celebrate their iconic debut album Unknown Pleasures 40th anniversary, which just had a special edition ruby reissue.

In this episode, Hooky laments he was initially heartbroken that the record did not sound like The Sex Pistols or The Clash, while Sumner comments on the strange way producer Martin Hannett mixed the record.

In the end, Morris, Sumner, and Hook all agree that despite the record did not match the intensity of Joy Division as a live band—if they had their way it would have ruined “probably one of the greatest albums of the 20th century.”
