Staytus, the sensationally sinister synth-slinger rising rapidly through industrial-electronic and nu-metal ranks, is back with a brutal bang on her newest single, How To Be A Serial Killer. Marking the blistering climax of her cinematic Twisted Frames saga, the track gleefully revels in its relentless, raw power, blending horror-film hysteria with devastatingly direct lyrical punches.
Produced by Matt McJunkins (A Perfect Circle) at Secret Hand Studios, this latest single channels explosive emotional chaos into a ferocious fusion of crunching nu-metal riffs and abrasive industrial aggression. Inspired loosely (but lovingly) by the cult horror-comedy starring Matthew Gray Gubler, Staytus serves up a savage sound salad tossed with equal parts satire, self-reflection, and seismic bass drops.
Listening to How To Be A Serial Killer feels like being strapped into a rollercoaster driven wildly off the rails by Trent Reznor and Courtney Love after an all-night horror marathon, complete with sharp turns and turbulent tempos. Her vocal delivery, reminiscent of Love at her loudest, slices through the dense digital din like a sharpened axe through a cardboard coffin.
Fans of Nine Inch Nails, Odonis Odonis, Black Dresses, Orgy, Static-X, and the criminally underrated God Lives Underwater will find familiar, furious friends here. Staytus brings her own unique twist, however; turning emotional trauma and hidden rage into a carnival of cathartic chaos. The track cleverly conveys the dangerous dance of bottling up bruised feelings: a meltdown warning listeners of the perils lurking beneath repression.
“How To Be A Serial Killer is me unmasking my inner chaos,” she says. “It’s intense, unfiltered, and a little terrifying—just like the film. This song is a metaphor for what happens when pain is left to rot in silence. It’s about the darkest thoughts we never dare to speak, turned into a performance of catharsis. I wanted this final track in the Twisted Frames series to leave a scar.”
With How To Be A Serial Killer, Staytus skillfully stabs at societal expectations, serving a satisfyingly sardonic slap to the face of conformity. Brace yourself…this genre-bending banshee is here to slay.
