Running the gamut from spectral solitude to a fully-fledged trio, Twin Ghosts have summoned something devilishly playful with their latest offering, Twilight Twist. Once a conjuring from the apparition Fantasmita, whose one-spirit show first materialised as a self-recorded EP released generously via Penumbra, the band now boasts the robust rhythmic bones of Laurel “The Medium” on bass and Fantasmitis laying down ghostly grooves on drums.
Their eerie brew churns with vintage vibes: 60s surf-rock riffs mingle provocatively with punk’s reckless abandon and rock’s reckless attitude. Imagine a blender loaded with vegan-friendly cocktails spilling onto a haunted dance floor, and you’ve arrived at their self-styled ‘gloom,’ a concoction that lands somewhere between The Sonics’ sinister strut, Celtic Frost’s icy chill, and the raw velocity of The Hives.
Twilight Twist, their latest instrumental gem, bursts forth with rollicking riffs, smokin’ guitar licks and a joyous disregard for decorum, ushered into life by Félix Almodóvar’s cheerfully absurd video. Real estate speculation looms as the great villain, forcing even creatures of classic cinema: Wolfman, The Mummy, and a lovingly low-budget Scooby-Doo ghost – to bunk together just to make ends meet. Cue Twin Ghosts, who crash this spectral cohabitation with their spirited surf-rock séance, prompting the monsters to twist, twirl, and plot against greedy landlords.
The video is a playful protest, a giddy revenge fantasy that celebrates rebellion in all its ludicrous glory. Heads metaphorically roll as Twin Ghosts’ ghoulish dance party rages, proving that even in the face of supernatural gentrification, there’s still room to shake, shimmy, and stick it to the speculative ghouls haunting our communities. Let’s have a Monster Mash!
